Uses of Propane
- Your Primary Heat Source:
A propane furnace consistently supplies air
at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Electric heat pumps
dispense 95-degree air, which is less than
body temperature (98.6 degrees), so the air
feels cool, not warm. Propane gas furnaces
last an average of 20 years, while electric
heat pumps last an average of 12 years. Plus,
the cost of repairing propane gas furnaces is
lower than the cost of repairing electric
heaters.
- Space Heating:
Propane-fueled space heaters are up to 99.9
percent efficient and include oxygen depletion
sensors that automatically turn units off if
oxygen levels drop below specified levels. They
can also include thermostats and heat distribution
blowers. Propane-fueled space heaters produce
fewer air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions
than those fueled by electricity. In fact, the
energy used to power electric heaters produces
emissions two to four times higher than the energy
produced to power propane heaters.
- Clothes Drying:
Propane-fueled dryers can complete drying tasks
in approximately three-quarters of the time it
takes an electric unit. Some models save up to
65 percent in costs over electric dryers.
- Cooking:
Propane-fueled cook tops offer instant heat and
absolute temperature control. It's not surprising
that ninety-seven percent of professional chefs
prefer cooking with gas. Unlike electricity-powered
appliances, propane appliances are not affected
by power outages.
- Water Heating:
Propane gas water heaters cost approximately $10
per month less to operate than comparable electric
units. On average, propane water heaters are 42
percent less expensive than electric heaters. Over
an average life span, propane gas water heaters can
save homeowners nearly $2,000 more than an electric
unit. Propane gas water heaters also heat more than
twice as much water in an hour as a comparable
electric model.
- Pool and Spa Water Heating:
Propane gas pool and spa heaters use significantly
less energy and heat water much faster than electric
heaters. In most areas of the country, gas is by far
the cheapest heating fuel for pools and spas. In
addition to cost factors, a gas heater is superior to
even a 220-volt electric heater for the quickest
recovery time. Our Lennox pool and spa heaters are
design-certified by the American Gas Association and
test to ANSI standards.
- Fireplace Inserts:
Sales of gas burning fireplace units are on the rise.
In fact, some propane markets report that nearly one-third
of new fireplace customers are asking specifically for
propane hearth products. Propane gas fireplace systems
cost between 30 and 60 percent less per hour of operation
than wood burning fireplaces. Propane gas fireplaces
emit 40 times fewer emissions than wood-burning units
and cost less to operate. Propane gas fireplaces can
be turned off easily with a switch, eliminating concern
about remaining embers.
Energy Savings Tips
Home Heating
- Residential heating systems need regular tune-ups.
Contact your local propane supplier to inquire about a
home-heating system inspection program.
- Change your furnace filter monthly. Clean filters
will save you money on your heating bill.
- Consider investing in a furnace thermostat timer
that can save money by lowering your home's temperature
when you are not at home.
- Protect against drafts around windows and doors by
caulking and weather-stripping.
- If your are purchasing a fireplace, consider selecting
one fueled by propane. Propane fireplaces burn more efficiently
than wood-burning models and distribute heat more evenly throughout
the room.
Water Heaters
- You can save more than 10 percent on your water-heating bill
by turning down your water heater from the standard 140 degrees to
130 degrees.
- To extend your water heater's life and increase energy efficiency,
drain it every six months to remove lime deposits and sediment.
- Install flow-restricting showerheads. You can reduce hot water
usage by up to 50 percent without affecting shower pressure.
- Repair leaky faucets. A leak that fills a coffee cup in
10 minutes wastes 3,200 gallons of water a year.
Home Appliances
- Gas ranges with electronic ignition systems will use 40
percent less energy than a standing pilot system.
- Be sure that all burners are burning with a blue, cone-shaped
flame. A yellow flame indicates clogged air inlets or burners that
need adjustment. Contact your propane supplier's service department
immediately if you do not see a blue flame.
- Check the seal on your oven door. Gaps or tears in the seal
will let heat escape and waste energy.
Key Benefits
- Clean Burning:Propane gas burns so clean that
log sets and room heaters can be designed to be non-vented,
providing 100% of the heat generated into the conditioned
space.
- High output:Propane hot water heaters can be half
as large as electric and provide much more hot water. Think
about that the next time your shower gets cold.
- Clean, efficient, Tanner Propane.
